Recycling in St.John’s, Newfoundlandand Labrador: Depotsas social enterprise

This report explores how the deposit-return system for beverage containers in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, has enabled the development of innovative recycling social enterprises while also reshaping the livelihoods of waste pickers. Focusing on Ever Green Environmental, the paper documents how a not-for-profit recycling depot evolved from a mental health workshop into a large-scale social enterprise providing decent work opportunities for people facing barriers to employment, including individuals with mental health challenges, intellectual disabilities, and refugees. Through technological innovation, customer-centered services, and diversified recycling streams, Ever Green has become one of the province’s most significant recycling operators. At the same time, the report examines the role of “professional recyclers” (waste pickers) in St. John’s, highlighting both the community relationships they have historically built and the potential impacts that automation and digitized recycling systems may have on their access to recyclable materials and income opportunities.

This report was written by Leslie Vryenhoek and published in 2026 by the Ground Score Association and the International Alliance of Waste Pickers.
